the absolute best way is for a shop to hot tank it. the hot acid/degreasing chemicals get carbon off as well as oils/grunge. (Carbon from EGR operations) if you don't have an EGR maybe carbon is not that much an issue.

I like to use an all purpose cleaner like Simple Green or Megs diluted with water. Just spray that on the whole engine and let it for a few minutes. Then spray that off with a hose trying not to use much pressure. Also try to avoid electrical components and especially the alternator. After you rinse off turn the engine on and let it run for about 5 minutes. This will dry everything off and you are ready to dress the engine. CD2 is very popular for an engine detailer.

As far as total engine cleaning, I use Mean Green. But, like the other post said, watch out for eletrical stuff and sensors. As far as the throttle body, i use a carb cleaner and a toothbrush. It works very well. Just make sure your engine is cooled back down before you apply and when you fire it back up, make sure everything is dry so it doesn't cause major combustion.

It's just my .0123445433 percentage of a cent.

Definitely find some CD-2 Engine Detailer and give the engine a good coating of that once you get it all degreased. That stuff is like tire foam, but for engines I know my engine is still new, but I just love posting this picture when people want to know what CD-2 can do for then engine bay:
