Default Polish by hand?

I'm clear on the differences between polishing and waxing. Wax only protects, whereas polish restores. Is there any good in polishing by hand? Does it really do anything, or should I be purchasing an orbital thingy?

I've ALWAYS polished by hand all my vehicles. I've never done it to a Mustang, as I just bought it, but on all my other vehicles I have. I have gotten excellent results doing it by hand, so no need for a power polisher.

Polishing by hand is just fine so long as you don't have serious defect removal to do.

Ken,

Learn early from the experience of others. Invest in a PC random orbital.

See my post under "WOWW"

good waxing.

Power is nice, I'll agree. They work nice, you can do the job a whole lot faster, but you do have to be careful not to burn the paint and such. Way to think of it is this:

There is nothing a power polisher can do that you cannot do by hand.

Very untrue, you can only do so much paint correction by hand, well very little really. The Porter Cable is a high speed orbital and you don't have to worry about burning up your paint. It is completely safe and you can get professional results. That is why it is so popular.

Okay, I've heard of this Porter Cable before. Which model? Best place to buy?

Hmmmmm, ok, now I'm curious, how does the PC not burn your paint ? If you hold it in the same spot, how does it not generate heat ?

I will agree, my earlier statement needed some more clarity. If your paint is in decent shape, hand polishing will do the same job that a power polish will. However, if your paint has serious defects in it, then yes, some serious dutycompounds will require you to use a power machine.

I dunno, these are my own personal opinions and results from working in a detailing shop when I was going to university. We did a LOT of hand and power polishing, and we always saved the power for the seriously worn paint.

Ken
It is the Porter Cable model 7424. They can be found on my website under the Porter Cable section. I carry these by themselves and all with everything needed to get started.
