um....waxing as in after you wash and dry your car you wax the car to protect it from rain/uv rays/acid bird poo. dont wax the lights that may leave a residue as well any plastic or rubber. wax isnt exspensive maybe what 2-5 bucks depending on brand? I use the mothers clay bar and wax kit. I think its around 8-10 bucks but it cleans the paint nicely. but dont glob alot of wax use enough at a time to spread on a even area. after it sits for a minute or so rub it off.
hope that helps

Wax is a paint protectant. It helps the paint shine, stay smooth, bead water, all mentioned above, etc... The key is learning what all the different chemicals do. You've come to the right place as there are several very knowledgeable Detailers in here that love to help out. But in a nutshell:
Step 1 - Claybar: removes contaminates from your paint/clearcoat (even new cars) and leaves it smooth as butter.
Step 2 - Compound/Swirl Remover: for older or neglected paints, as the name says it removes swirls and other MINOR paint boo-boos. This step can be skipped on newer cars or paint that is well cared for
Step 3 - Polish: never skip this step, this is what nourishes your paint, makes it look rich and shiney
Step 4 - Wax: this protects your paint as mentioned above, as well as all the hard work you put into the first few steps - usually the last step.
Some will add a step of Glaze in there before the wax - your preference.

Yes a claybar is actually a bar of clay. You use a quick detailer of specific clay lube and lubrication, then you just let the claybar glide over the surface. There is no need to apply an pressure. At first the surface will feel rough or grab then once the claybar starts doing its job it will slide over the surface with ease. After you are done claying your paint will feel so smooth.
I actually carry a 4 oz. elastic claybar as well as the claybar and quick detailer as a lube that comes in a kit together if you are interested.
