Default Battery Acid on Paint

i had a pretty serious battery issue, and the short of it leaves me with acid splattered on the underside of my hood and down my engine bay beneath the battery.. it was a little while before i realized it, so it corroded pretty well and i've got some rust starting. kinda discouraging..
i'm just looking to stop the rust in the engine bay. i dont mind if the paint is gone, or if it doesnt look perfect. i neutralized the acid with some water and baking soda. any suggestions on my next step? i was gonna try to sand away some rust with sandpaper and see how deep it goes. then maybe i can get a clearcoat or something similiar to prevent the spread of the rust. i really dont want to have to take it to a body shop.. i dont mind doing the work myself, i'm just not too sure what to do(:
i'd really appreciate any help.
its an 06 satin silver 4.0l, if anyone cares(:
thanks again.
