Default prep work

I just purchased a 86 GT, it's kind of a project and the first thing on my list is to get a paint job. I want to do the prep work myself and just have the car sprayed the original color. I had a few questions such as:

what different size grit sand paper do I need?

do i need a sander or can I get a attachment for my drill?

how should I treat the rust spots? (there are only a few mostly surface but there is one spot on the right rear 1/4 panel that looks pitted)

what kind of primer should I use? (I have seen spray and a putty spread type)

If anyone could give me any helpful tips I would appreciate it, this is my first go at body work and I want to do it right.

heres a pic of the 86 to show you what I am dealing with

Default RE: prep work

ir your going to prime it, go with 320 grit paper. best thing to do is get soft a sanding block that bends. first whipe down your car with a solvent, let it dry, then start sanding. as for the rust, sand it down, and find some type of rust stopper. i would go to a auto paint store, tell them what your doing, and take their suggestions, and spend the money to get it done rite. remember, 90% of a paintjob is prep work.
