How to ID my 66FB
Hi all, new member seeking help IDing my car. I bought it as a 66FB with 289 and 4spd.
I did the usual VIN (inside front guard) and door plate checks via one of those online data decoders.
Apparently the car is a 66 coupe with 6 cylinder engine?!?!
Closer inspection shows a previous bender on the passenger front side and the inner guard has clearly been replaced...with one from a 6cyl coupe. The door plate is a reproduction with all the wrong info from the guard...meaningless.
All i have is the engine number on the block, matching an old registration paper found in the glove compartment.
Can anyone tell me if there was a relationship between the engine number and the consecutive unit number?
Is there any way i can trace back from this? All i really want to know is what the car started life as.
thanks

ok, i will look into that. thanks! I suspect that the whole passenger front quarter has been replaced. i will get a photo on the weekend and post that. I think the one you are referring to is the inner front guard (as we call it). Is what you refer to as the "apron" basically the panel on the inside between the engine and the fender. there is a number right on top where they meet, just in front of the shock tower.
Does the engine number provide any clues? Would it tell me if it is A,C or K code?

Aussie,
While the front end could have been replaced including vin, one would have thought they would have removed the old vin, as the new vin is from a less valuable car but...... what does the paperwork say the car is? have you got 5 or 4 wheel nut axles, 4 were standard on the I6's put the vin number up here just to confirm your id. the vin for 66 fb woulf look 6(f,r,t)09(C,A or K)123456 6r09k123456 = a 66 fb with hipo v8 made in san jose

thanks to 67t5, Paddy and Soaring.
i will check the reg paper again, but fairly sure the VIN is the incorrect one. i will put it up as a new post when i find it!!
is there nothing to be learnt from the engine number??

No there isn't anything you can rely on by the engine number. Yes, the engine number will tell you which engine it is, but not that it came with that car from the factory. Ford threw away all the records for the years of 1964-66, so not even Marti who bought all of Ford's records can give you a report. What VIN does the title have on it? Yes, I know that titles can be changed just as can the door tag and the inner fender, but usually honest folks don't screw around with the paperwork.
