I have been having a great deal of trouble with my turn signals. All flashers have been replaced and the turn signal cam as well. The entire wiring harness, except for the steering column, has also been replaced and looked at by a mechanic to ensure it was done properly. The car starts and works just fine. The problem with the turn signals seemed to be fixed, until the car is put into reverse. Once in reverse the fuse on which the turn signals are on blows. It is the same thing that happened before the car was rewired. I was wondering if anyone has encountered a problem such as this before or would know the best way of fixing it?

 

Check to see if you have the right bulbs in the backup lights. These are like a 1157 but the contacts have a ground and power that go to the filiment. I forget the number but they need to be correct, otherwise they will ground out. You can easily ckeck by removing the bulbs and see if the signal lights work and the fuse don't blow when you go into reverse. I'm not too sure the wiring is correct but this may fix the problem for the time being, but you will have no backup lights.

 

The back up lights switch lead is gounding out is grounding out and causing it to blow. follow the wires and you will find it.

 

I think the backup lights are 1156.

As far as the short.....I replaced the turn signal switch on my '69 F100and all the wires were the same color code. The as soon as Iselected right or left it blew the fuse and the brake lights wouldn't work either. After a lot of head scratching I discovered that even though the wires all matched by color they were all hooked to different points on the switch. i had to trace each wire and put the white/blue wire where the brown one went..etc.

Maybe you need to get a diagram, a buddy to help traceand use a continuity tester to make sure the wires are what they should be and go where they should goon the new harness?

PS. The backup light circuit shouldn't be tied in with the turn signals at all so that should be a tipoff that something is crossed up.

 

The back up lamps should be an 1142. Unplug the lights at the connectors at the lights (easier than pulloing bulb). If it continues to blow the fuse than check the back up light switch. Is this automatic?

Also, the turn signal and back up lights ARE on the same circuit. So it's not crossed.

 

The 1156's look correct but will not work. The switch as said before is also a prime location to look, as it may be caput.

 

My bet is he has the wrong bulbs installed.....2 prong instead of the correct single prong...

 

Yeah it was the bulbs. thanks a lot. Does anyone know for sure which bulbs it would be? i'm also having trouble with the horn now and emergency flashers. the steering wheel was replaced a few months ago and all worked fine. After the re-wiring was done there is no response from the horn or the emergency flashers. There is power going the line for the flashers. Getting no reaction from the copper plating on steering wheel

 

I was just looking at the set up in the steering wheel column and noticed that the top spring/rod that makes contact with the steering wheel assembly was missing the small cap. When i use a screw driver to conect the spring/rod assembly to the steering column i get horn. when i just touch it to the copper plate and press the horn i get nothing. i assumed that it would just be the missing cap but the screwdriver is acting as the cap.

 

A spent .22 shell may work for the cap.
