The 66 i am getting has no paperwork with it so i had a few questions

1. how do i get paperwork for this car?

2. if i can register do i pay sales tax on the value of the car or on the price i paid for the car?

3. can i take the vin and get a history on the car?


these might seem like dumb questions but i am clueless when it comes to paperwork on these old cars.

Depends on the laws of your state.

Typically the sale price. If you report you paid $1000 for a late-model Mustang, this would raise a red flag, and they'd probably come after you for more.

3. can i take the vin and get a history on the car?
Most states retain little or no history data on cars, and are unlikely to tell you even that much.

You'll need a knowlegeable agent, and one who's not going to take the easy way out and just say "no".

I once registered a car that was two combined, but the numbers on the chassis weren't on the title I had. I provided a rubbing of the VIN, and an invoice for the sale of the chassis, and I got a new A title in the correct VIN.

 

First and foremost, don't Fudge with the DMV. If you walk in and start by lying about the price, they know it and you are going to have a hard time with them helping you on the rest of the matter.
The value is what you paid. If it was a gift, then list it as a gift and they will have you give an estimated value. What you would expect to sell it for right then and there. It's ok to list the value a junk yard would give you if the car is a piece of junk right now ($200), but if it has a custom restored car, don't try it! If you mess with them, they aren't going to want to do you any favors.
A lot of the stuff you need to do can be done at your AAA office. You may need to go to the DMV for some of the paperwork especially if you have no paperwork. But a AAA office will be a lot more helpful in telling you EXACTLY what they are going to require, things that you MAY need to get it legal.
If it hasn't been registered in years and you did not get it from the prior registered owner (deceased..etc), you will have to prove an attempt to contact the prior owner. It can get messy, that's why I suggest contacting them first. Lines are shorter, you can get answers over the phone and you won't get surprised with other paperwork requirements after standing in line for hours, like you would at the DMV.
If you have a bill of sale from the prior owner, then it will be a breeze, other papers and a lot of fees will be required, but you won't have a problem.
Start out at the local AAA, get in and out in under 30 minutes usually, get what paperwork they can help you with directly and get all the info for when you do go to the DMV. If you don't have a membership, get one...same time you go to see them about this registration. The free tow service is more than worth it.
