diesel
i'm sorry in advance, this is not really mustang related, but it is ford related.
i'm looking into buying a truck to tow my 66 around to body shops and the like. i also want it as a DD. i was wondering are there any advantages to buying a diesel, or should i just go with a gas truck. i've heard there are set backs with diesel's like little 5-10 dollar parts dieing and needing to be replaced often (or something like that). my main concerns are reliablity and gas mileage. any info, especially on the parts thing, would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Well, the old 7.3 powerstrokes are dead reliable, get good mileage, but ask your self how many miles per year? Thats the key, if its low miles then mpg advantage is lost. I tow my trailers and boat with my 01 F-350 Dually which is the V-10 and it pulls a 10,000 lb boat no problem, but I work at home so I only put on 6-8k miles per year at best. If you drive alot then the diesels are great. The new 6.0 PSD seems to have the bugs worked out but that darn rumor of going to a twin turbo in 07-08 may put you off. I dont know, let me know how much you want to spend!

RE: diesel
i'm just trying to get an idea. really when it comes to the bodywork, i'm taking a long hike and for the most part i do alot of driving. plus soon enough it will end up being a landscaping truck, so i think the chances of massive driving are good and will increase. right now, i can't afford to pay attention. i have to pay 440 in leu of 2 points on my license and replace the front pass side hub assy on my buick before the bearings decide to really sieze up on me and the suspension, including ball joints.
my biggest thing was what i had heard about the sensors and various other small parts either breaking or malfunctioning.

well it seems you are a good candidate for an older 7.3 powerstroke but dont expect to find on with less than 100k miles on it, which is no big deal at all, thats just gettin broken in. As for all the other miscellaneous things, its no different than a gas truck

I know this is a ford site but if your buying a diesel you should really consider a cummins. I've had a cummins and a PSD. My cummins was 4wd 3500 and got 21mpg as a driver and 16 towing my jeep.
The PSD was a 99 7.3 and the best i got unloaded was 14.
Higher costs are stuff like oil changes, and PSD are bad about crank sensors going out $100.

yeah, i have thought about a cummins. i gotta find something in my price range. i'd really rather stick to ford, but whatever i can find that fits my budget will be the victor!
