Default Reverse lights on at all times

So i have a dilemma...my check engine light came on a few weeks ago...i have tried that battery removal, my first step...then i tried it 2 more times. Every time it would come back on after driving 50 miles or so. So then last week i was pulled over. Apparently, my reverse lights (bright white) stay on at all times even when i do not have my headlights on. I was wondering if someone could either tell my why or what i should do to correct this problem!!! I was thinking that there might be a microsensor in the shifter (5 spd manual v6 3.8L, 2000 mustang) that turned on the lights when i threw it into reverse that was just never switched off. Please help asap!
thanks

Im not sure exactly where the switch is on your model, but I think its on the side of the tranny. It should be just one wire. When you find it disconnect the wire and see if the lights went out, if they do the switch is most likely bad.

The switch you are looking for is a "NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH" andf it should be on the tail shaft of your tranny. You have a manual so that will be one of very few on the tranny.

Just make sure you use jack stands and support the car before crawling under there. After youre supported and under there disconnect it and if that helps and the light goes out you have a neutral safety switch out.

definitely sounds like a bad or stuck back up light switch. once you locate it, you might be able to free it up with some WD-40 rather than have to replace it.

Hey guys Im prety shure i have the same problem, do you know where that neutral saftey switch would be on a 89 aod? I solved the problem by taking the fuse out. But that is only temporary.

the neutral start switch is located on the left side of the AOD tranny just above the shift linkage arm on the side of the tranny sticking straight up. the reverse light switch is integral with the neutral start switch, so if your back-up lights are on all the time, the switch is bad and must be replaced.
