Default 5th gear popping out

94 mustang with hurst comp plus shifter:

trans works fine in all gears but 5th.
when driving in 5th gear the shifter will slowly find its way back to neutral. (2-20 seconds)
I am guessing there is a detent and or a shift form issue.

anyone have experience with problem or trans to know exact issue?

thanks

dave

Dave, I ran into this a few months back - I couldn't go into 1st, 3rd or 5th. I fixed it by popping off the shifter bezel and adjusting the bolt on the front of the throw. There's one in the back and one in the front. Just back it off a couple of rounds and see how it acts. It may have a jam nut or two on it - it's not the sort of thing you want going out of whack, so when you get it right, lock the bolt in place. If it doesn't have any nuts on it, now would be the time to put em on. Hope this works!

--EDIT--

Right at first, my tranny only wouldn't go into 5th, either. Then it stopped going into 3rd and 1st within a few miles. I bet it'll get worse as the bolt goes further out of spec, if this is what it ends up being.

Groundpounder, I like your blurb. I have a similar one for my business. Anytime someone whines about a price, I say...

Price, quality, or service...pick two!

I will try and adjust the bolt, but it looks like there is a small gap between the stop bolt and shifter.
Any ideas if it turns out that its not out of adjustment?

Shift keys, detents, shift forks?

regards

dave

yes it’s the bolts. you are supposed 2 put it into 3rd then tighten the bolts down until it hits the shifter and the back it off a half turn , same with it in 4th.

It wasn't the stop bolts.
I pulled the trans today and found out the 5th gear synchronizer assy is bad.
The engadgment splines are badly worn on the tips. I would guess there is less than 1/2 the normal engadgement.
The worse part of this is that the 5th gear (driver) has worn engadgment splines.
This means I need a new 5th gear driver and syn assy.

Anybody know a good place to buy such a item?

Center part of 5th sync will not slide off shaft. snap ring is removed. I thought it was suppose to slide off?
any tips?

thanks

Man, that stinks. I was hoping you would get the easy fix - no such luck and I'm sorry to hear that![:@]

There are a couple of Mustang suppliers on eBay that I have had good luck with: parkwayford (I'd try there first) blueovalindustries dynamicracingproducts to name three ID's

To get that piece off, I would apply some very gentle heat. Also, if you have a slide hammer with a proper attachment, that would work as well. If you don't have a slide hammer, grab a piece of wood and tap the end of the shaft while you pull on the piece that doesn't want to cooperate.

Keep us posted. Hope your luck gets better.
