Can i test the alt myself? Ive got a multimeter.

Well if you put the multimeter on the output the voltage should change once you go above like 1000 RPM's. Have someone else rev it and look for a change to around 14 volts. It's just as easy to pull it out and take it to a parts store to have it tested.

a multimeter will let you check the voltage across the battery with the engine running to see if the alternator is putting out some current and the voltage should be 13.5-14.5 volts, but this test will not tell you if the alternator is putting out the amps (current) it should be. that's why vertstang said to take it off and have it tested on a test bench because they can test the amps it is putting out to make sure it is doing what it's supposed to.
