cut out exhaust

RE: cut out exhaust
If you want to do that spend the extra cash and get electric cutouts. A couple of times of crawling under the car to cap and uncap will make it worth while.
Y pipe? That's an F-body part unless you drive a 6 cylinder. You have an h pipe or if you swapped it to an x-pipe. You would need two cutouts either way.
It sounds ok just really freaking loud. Good if you only plan on using at the track and want to keep the stock exhaust. Probably spend the same amount of money getting the cutouts, installing them, as you would for a nice catback. but you will see better horse power gains with cut out but a drop in torque.

The Y-pipe I think he's referring to is the actual cut-out pipe you install before the mufflers that opens up for open exhaust, or you can close it off for driving on the street. Also, Y-pipe isn't only an F-body term. GTs 1985 and prior had Y-pipe exhaust systems. If you want a cut-out go for it. It is pretty loud without mufflers though. I drove my '96 for awhile without mufflers with the stock H-pipe and man it was freakin' loud! A little too loud for me, especially with the exhaust dumped right underneath the car.

It's def too loud unless you're gonna go with the cutouts just for racing or something. I'd go with the ones you can operate from inside instead of getting underneath all the time. The 85's had a different tranny crossmember for the Y. don't know what year you have but if you have an old one and wanna upgrade you just need a new crossmember, the double hump one.
