350? Am I missing something?

I would say go with whatever is cheapest... THEN STROKE IT like....well... you get it. Hahaha. A storker w/ mad power in a '66 would be sweet. If you're just looking for a badass sunday driver I vote 289 or 302.
I would never stroke a 289, they are not as strong as the 302s. Cannot handle a bigger stroke....thinner cylinder walls etc...
WRONG!

The only difference in the 289's and 302's are the stroke!

The blocks are not different.

really? thanks for the update, I always thought you wouldn't want the 289, but I did a little research and found they were they were the same just with a different stroke.

Actually I believe the 66 6 cylinder Mustangs had a 7.5 inch rear end and most were 2.73 gears(w/automatic) with 4 lug axles. The typical V8 Mustang that year had the 8 inch rear end were also the sucky 2.73 gears, 5 lug axles(W/automatic). It would definitely be best to swap the rear. A good donor for the 9 inch rear are the 57-60 Ford Fairlanes and Galaxys. The rear is also a straight bolt up. You can use your axles from and drum assy. from the 8 inch mustang rear or Granada or Maverick. The brakes off that 57 Ford may still have asbestos shoes on it so use caution when you remove them. The 9 inch rear will open a lot of possibilities for gears cheaply. Ford used alot of 3.50 L rears in the 4 wheel drive trucks. Even in the early Broncos the came w/ 3.50 L or 4.11L gears. Many Ford Econoline vans had a 3.25L . So you can pretty much get your gear situation where you want it cheaply if you get the 9 inch rear. Glad to help if you need it. Good luck!

No problem man.Thats why im here. What good would it be to give out bad info?

But no problem man im glad you were able to learn something.I hope you didnt think i was coming off like a dick.I just dont want to have bad info running around if i can help it.

Now if you get technical there were a few tears that the 289 blocks wouldnt bolt to most trannies those were the 5 bolt bellhousings and those 289's are rare.If you happen to run across one sell it to a collector or restorer of old stangs.
