Default Tranny experts...need help please!

Guys -

I've read several mustang boards and done several searches to address my problem. As I am relatively new to the whole Mustang scene, I need some confirmation/advice.

To provide some background, its a 97 GT, 5 speed, bone stock. To provide some direction of where I want to take this car, I would like to someday get to 300-350 HP most likely with a supercharger.

My underlying problem is that my car grinds when I shift from 1st to 2nd at higher rpm shifts. From what I have read on various boards, this appears to be related to the synchro in the transmission. My intent, at least at this point, is to change the oil first to see if I can avoid the rebuild (have heard this helps in some instances and its a cheap troubleshooting step) since the car only has 38,000 miles on it. Now for the questions for you experts:

1. As stated, I have a 97 GT 5 Speed which, from my understanding, it is a T-45, is that correct?
2. There is a wide debate over putting ATF or Syncromesh in the tranny. Further adding to the debate is the use of either of the fluids previous mentioned with a friction modifier. Thoughts on which to use and why based on my problem???

Appreciate everyones help here. I've been out of the Mustang world until recently and this gear shift thing is really driving me nuts. I don't run into it all that often but it really bugs me that I can't drive the car to it true potential as it stands now. Thanks.
