Default Gearchange problems

First of all Hi from England ..... great site you have here.

My friend has a 2002 V8 mustang GT and is hearing some wierd noises when changing gear at the moment. Unfortunately I am too far away to go and look at it myself but do want to make sure she's not ripped off by some unscrupilous mechanic (we all know they are out there).

The problem shows when changing gear (normally 2nd and 3rd but mainly on 3rd) when she can hear a "grinding/pinging noise".

Anyone have any suggestions on problem?

She is in California if there are any recommended mechanics in that area.

Thanks in advance.
