Default Difference between gauges 94-98 and 99-04

Can anyone tell the difference between the 94-98 gauge clusters and the 99-04 gauge clusters. I am building a 1994 car with a 03 Lightning motor. I want to run the autometer gauge cluster that fits the 99-04 cars. Everywhere I look it says they will not fit the 94-98 cars. However I cannot find anyone to tell me what the difference is. Is the clusters different in size or is the wiring harness that attaches to the gauages and the dash?

Thanks
Doug Suttles
