Default Gear Ratio

I want to get a 4.10 gear ratio on my stang, but I was wondering what this would to my gas milage. My stang is an every day driver and with the way that gas prices are I can not afford to fill up twice a week. An help would be appreciated.

depends if u do alot of highway driving?..I have 3.73's in my car and like them alot they give u better mpg then 4.10's but I took the highway home tonight and was doin about 75-80 and used a whole 1/4 tank of gass ouch! lol...so even if u decided to go w/ 3.73's its still gonna eat ur wallet unless u dont do any highway driving

Plus in the 4.6's the 3.73's won't give you as much kick as they do in a 5.0 cause of the different powerbands.

I do a good deal of highway driving and I will be going off to college so I will be doing alot of highway driving in the near future. What gear ratio do you guys recomend. I want to be able to drag race but at the same time I don't want really bad gas milage. I know that idealy I should have two cars one to race and one to drive every day but I love working on my Mustang and I do not have the money for a second car. If you guys have any other ideas that will give me more power or acceleration I would appreciate it. I have installed a Diablo Deltta chip and a cold air intake but that is all that I have done.

I can tell you your not gonna notice any gas mileage increase around town between 4.10's, 3.73's, or even the stock 3.27's, and in most cases 4.10's in a 4.6 (especially the 2002+ due to the numerically lower 5th gear ratio) will net you BETTER gas mileage around town, but you'll be cruising in 4th instead of 3rd. With 4.10's your gonna be spinning at about 2900rpm at 80mph, so make sure your ok with that before you go swapping for 4.10's. Honestly, in my opinion, unless your supercharged your gonna feel like 3.73's in a 4.6 is a waste once you get them in - but hey, to each their own.

I guess that I should have mentioned that I drive a 3.8. I have seen other 3.8s at the drag races that have turned in great times and I would like to turn my car into a 10 sec. car. My car is a 2001 and it is an automatic.

No disrespect intended, but a 10 sec 3.8L Automatic is about the biggest oxymoron you can get. 3.8 or 4.6, they rev about the same. You really, really need 4.10's, and even with that 14's would be a good # to run, hell maybe even 15's. You've got along way to go - not that it can't be done - after improbable and impossible are differnent things right?

yes but a gear change alone isn't likely to get you from a 15.9 to a 14.9, most likely to run 14's your gonna need gears and good exhaust minimum, and even thats iffy. I can tell you with good certainty that most likely your gonna run mid 16's, I was being generous with a 15 second guestimate. But hey, the only way to find out for sure is to take it to the track!

to run 10's in the 1/4 mile on the strip you would need a purpose built race car complete with a roll cage, slicks, axle retention devices, 5 point safety harness, race suspension and a big motor making 500+ HP, so I don't think you will get there starting with a V-6. You need to get much more realistic in your chosen goals!
