Do you guys have any rules of thumb about HP related to gear ratio... Am I correct in assuming, the horse power your car is putting out, the higher your top end speed can be, thus the lower your revolutions at any speed relative to a car of lesser hp. In a stock mustang... you're running about 1600 rpm's in 5th at highway speeds... a little bit of work and you'll never use 5th gear for commuting. Just curious if anyone has ever run into the problem with too much power for their stock gears.

I'm getting it... with my math background you'd think I'd catch on a little quicker... at what point does traction become a problem with the gears? Obviously you'd love to have the lowest gear ratio on the back end you could if you had enough ponies up front to move that, but for practical purposes we'll never have that kind of power... alright... 373 it is

the traction point varies widely with the road or strip surface, the tire design, width, diameter, tire compound, inflation pressure, and how well the car transfers weight to the rear when under hard acceleration. hell, even with the stock 2.73's in an auto Fox a little moisture on the road is all you need to break traction which can make things interesting if you ain't paying attention, to to off topic and look at the 94 wreck thread if you want to see what can happen. a load of bricks in the back really helps out during the winter months!

whats cheaper than $150 for a set of gears that would dramatically increase accelleration? Oh yea roundman they do make 3.90's, but FMS doesnt make them. The FMS gears are the only gears I would EVER use on an 8.8 as well...

you're right again MD, right after I posted that I saw that Jeg's sells a 3.89 gear for 8.8 rears too. US gears makes the gears for Strange Engineering and that's what I've got in my 9" that I bought from Strange. no complaints about them so far.

Not saying that other gears are inferior to the quality of FMS, just that for the average Joe like me the FMS gears are easier to install because you usually don't have to worry with pinion depth adjustment or backlash (much) when you stay in the family. If I could setup a rear-end like the pro's I'd probably have a different opinion, but I don't have the tooling to do so [&:] I can sling em in but I can't guarantee there won't be a little noise [:-]

yeah, what's a little noise to worry about when the driver will probably manage to wreck the car before the gears become a problem!

if you want to run 10s the power you will have to make will destroy the 7.5 rear end. buy a ford motorsport 8.8 loaded with 4.10s and a t-lok.
