My bro is thinking about changing his tranny from auto to manual. the car is a 1988 mustang gt hatchback. How hard is it to convert it from an auto tranny to a manual tranny? About how long would it take? Has anyone of ya'll done it before? If so tell me about it. Thanks!

Well, its never an easy task switching from auto to manual, no matter what the car. From what I've heard, the most annoying (maybe also the hardest) part, believe it or not, is the installation of the clutch pedal. Trust me, its not fun working in that cramped spot.

Hell, some people even whine about the shifter setup!

Ive never worked on a mustang, so I cant really give an estimate on difficulty or time, but my advice is that you should leave it to someone who has a pretty good amount of knowledge on transmissions. The transmission isnt a modification you can half-***, you either do it completely right, or let someone else who is better equipped handle it. I'm not saying youre not skilled, im just saying that you shouldnt tamper with it unless youre at least 95% positive of what you're doing.


But based on my experience, a skilled mechanic can convert a tranny in a matter of 5-8 hours, while a "learn as you go" conversion can take up to 5-8 days. (depends on how fast you learn, and how many hours a day youre putting in).
