Engine Light keeps flipping on...

I believe the 96 Mustang is OBDII compliant. When that light comes on again, go to an AutoZone and have them scan the ECU to see what code comes up. It's free.
It may be stored if it's come on and off a few times so you may be able to find out without the light on.

OBDII compliant means that it uses a standard set of codes to represent engine and emission related problems. These codes can be retrieved by using a Hand Held code reader that's widley available.
Prior to 1995 every manufacturer and in some cases every model of car had its own cryptic codes used to identify problems. Many times they were retrieved using morse code like blips from a dash light or LED on the ECU and no manufacturer used the same connector to plug a scanner in.
I would say your other option is to take it to Pep Boys and ask them to run the same scan. Depending on the service guys some may do it for free some may want to charge you. Or you could try a different AutoZone location. The one you talked to you doesn't seem to know what they're talking about.

yeah, I'm wondering wtf that means too. I think it's AutoZone Noob slang for "I don't know how to use the scanner so I'll feed you a BS line."
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought hte whole point of OBDII was to standardize everything, thus making it universal.

We take our cars to Advance Auto for the free code scanning. So far, they have never been wrong. Hopefully, you only need to replace a sensor!
