Default yet another newb with a tech question

Hello fellow ponydudes,

I have a question for anyone whos had oild pressure gauge issues, I did a search and came up empty so here it goes.

My dad has a 91 GT , and as of late, the oil pressure gauge has been extremely low and at times has shown a reading of 0!

hes only got about 55k miles on it, and hes 72 years old, the damn thing is cherry. I am curious if it's the actual gauge, or isn't there a sensor somewhere in between the pump and gauge? Is this a common issue? where can i begin to diagnose this?

the gauge reads only sporadically up to 1 hash mark roughly 17lbs., it doesnt leak and has had no previous problems at all.

any input?

thanks

Start by testing the oil pressure with a known to be accurate guage.
If it's a mechanical guage, make sure there's no blockages in the line.
If it's an electrical guage, the sending unit could be bad.

So, it's an aftermarket gauge? Factory gauges are electric...senders go bad. I keep a mechanical gauge ($15 el cheapo) in my box just to troubleshoot such problems.

I pulled the motor (or had it done) and put in a new high flow oil pump. Still have stock gages and reads in the upper half (barely). I also use Castrol 20-50 and lucas oil treatment (110M) miles.
