Crappy day - Got a ticket =(
So here is the story, for any of you who care to know
I was driving on some back country roads today and the state department was cutting the grass in the ditches. The roads where covered with masses of grass. I had my cruise control set on 60 (speed limit 55) and I was just cruising and obeying the law. I start coming up on a big truck (Ford Dual-axle thing) pulling a horse trailer. Grass was flying all over the place and getting all over my car - I had just washed my car so I went to pass him. I don't know about anyone else but I do not pay attention to the speedo when passing, my goal is just to get around and then resume the speed limit. Well I do this and then I am letting the car coast back down to the set cruise control speed, when to my surprise a state trooper goes by me the opposite way and I see him pull in a driveway and swing around. I knew he was after me. He turns his lights on and I pull over. I hand over my registration and license and he goes and does his thing which takes forever. He comes back and hands me a sheet of paper and says "I circled your court date, Have a nice day sir." with the meanest expression on his face. I was charged with "Operating a Motor Vehicle on a Road/Highway going 85MPH in a zone that was 55MPH" I know for a fact I was not doing 85.. Maybe 70-75, but not 85. But yeah, anyways, that was my day. It really sucked! [:@]

You do know that you plead not guilty and schedule
a court date. Show up early and ask to speak to
the officer, or da. If they like your attitude, appeal
for no points, and
"repentance" they will reduce the charge to
something with no points.
You will probably pay the same fine but no points.
It would also help if you know a police officer that
will contact the ticketting officer before the court
date.
Been there.

i feel your pain, really....tickets suck... it is SO easy to get up
to 80-100 in 3rd gear when passing it's rediculous.....this coupled
with the fact that you were a little frustrated with all the road debris
made for a sh!tty day with the PO PO

If you maintain a good attitude, accept responsibility, etc then chances are you can be helped when the court date arrives. But if you go in with a ton of excuses (all of which have been heard countless times) then you won't stand a chance. Just accept responsibility, etc and see what they can do.A lot of times if you have a godo record they will reduce the fine, reduce the speed, or both. Some even get "filed" meaning that it goes away for now, but if you get another violation in 6 or 12 months 9depending) then this one comes back too.
If you were truly in the process of passing and slowing down when he 'clocked' you, then you'll probably get off. From state to state the drivers' manuals vary, but it generally states that 'it is the only time deemed when one can exceed the speed limit legally'. Just tell the judge you were passing a truck driving below the speed limit, and he will probably drop it.
Why didn't you voice your opinion to the officer about passing the truck? You gotta make your case with him. One secret. Never immidiatly give the cop your license and reg. The time you spend 'stalling to find your reg and license' is often the only chance you will have to plead your case with the cop. Often (as this guy seemed to do), the cop will quickly walk off with your info, and the next you'll see of him, is him approaching you with the ticket waiting to be signed. If it's written, it's too late to plead with the cop. Create a little extra time attempting to find your reg, and use this time to plead your case. Usually, the first 15 seconds of interaction with the cop is your best chance for him to 'see it your way'. A couple other tips. Often cops are powerhungry, which can be used to your advantage. When the cop first approaches, attempt to notice his rank on his sleeve. Address him by that rank. If he is a sergeant, call him sergeant. Often when you do this, they might ask you if you ever served on the force or the military. -See, you already made a connection with him, which will help your cause. But those first 15-20 sec is what getting out of the ticket is all about.
