Default over drive explaination please

hey fellas,

you know that song " Hot Rod Lincon " by Chralie Daniels

there is a part in the song that goes, " took my foot off the gas and man alive i shoved it down into over drive "

First ov all, let me ask you what " Over Drive " is.
secodly, why do you have to take your foot off and hit it hard? is that how you get into over drive?

ok, an overdrive is a gear beyond the 1:1 gear...all trannys have a 1:1 gear ratio...where the driveshaft turns once for every revolution of the engine. On a T5, it is 4th. A transmission with an overdrive that allows the driveshaft to spin faster than the engine.

as for the song, he let off the throttle to shift.....

Also, both automatic & manual trannies can have an overdrive gear, sometimes 2! like in some manual 6-speed trannies the top 2 gears can both be overdrive

Think of it as a highway gear... Basically it allows you to maintain your speed (or increase your speed) with lower RPMs to the engine. So if you can go teh same speed or faster with lower RPMs, you are saving some $$$ on gas and give the engine a little rest. So when youre on the highway is a set of 4.10s, you're not keeping the tach in the red just to go 85 MPH Well, maybe not that bad, but you get the idea.

Better gas mileage, less wear and tear, and a swap can be as cheap as $1500....
