RE: help choosing year to buy
I just got done buying my Mustang as well, so I'm familiar with the whole, "which year to buy" scenario. I think it comes down to what you want to spend. I myself like the current body styles overall, but I ended up buying a '96, with an obviously different body style. I did this for two reasons- it was a GT with a 5 spd, and I was able to pay it in cash. If I had chosen a GT 5 spd in a NEWER Mustang, I would be financing it with a bank, and have practically NO money for mods, or anything. So naturally, you are going to save money when going with an older Mustang, most times. You could buy a mid-90's Cobra for the price of a used 6-cyl '01 Mustang, and again, it comes down to spending. Hope this helps a little...GOOD LUCK!

RE: help choosing year to buy
I own a 87 conv, got it cheap.
I'd suggest, if you indeed go with the fox body and want to run the stock engine/efi
go with a 88 california edition with MAF or 89 and newer foxes with the MAF.
My co-worker says that the MAF will sense the extra airflow from headers, intake,
cam, heads and adjust the fuel. Speed desity efi (86-88 non california)cannot sense the change in airflow bec it only measures manifold air pressure, not flow.
Though there are most likely ways to mod up a speed density motor as well.
Anyone have a thought....i've got that speed density and dont want to pay for
a MAF conversion kit....
Finally, a cool option is the T-top. They made these throughout most of the 80's.
The new aero 87+ style are harder to find with a T top, but you could go 83-86
and put the aero bumpers on front and back...they bolt on....
only do that if you're going to put a crate motor and aftermarket driveline. The stock
rear is a 7.5 in which is supposively weaker than the later 87+ 8.8 inch rear.
and the 86 engine has poor performace heads.....
ok, good luck
