<SPAN class=spnMessageText id=msg><FONT color=#191970 size=2>i am starting to build my mustang. i have a 302 and a 351. i was going to stroke the 302 to 347 but i heardthe block wouldn't be strong enough??or i was going to build a 351 to i think a 393. which one would be better?? how could you get around 400+ ponys out of it without to much $ to just start off??any other suggestions for building my mustang???

Its almost always easier to get more horse power with more displacement, so go with the bore out 351. IMO

 

If both 302 and 351 are in similar shape then the obvious answer is to go with the 351.

Unless there are cracks or the bores have already been enlarged there's no problem going 347 with the 302. The guy who's building my 302 loves those stroker kits.
400+ isn't going to be cheap, unless you throw the bottle at it. My anticipated output is in the 380-400 range with a 302 bored .030 over. Of course I could have gone with higher compression hypereutectic pistons and saved quite a bit of money, but I want the option of pump gas and boost, so I went with low compression forged pistons. But everything I'm throwing at mine will end up running me about $5500-6000 including labor, balance, and parts.

Seems to me the cheapest way to get ~400 would be to plop a set of heads and a N2O kit on the 302. But then you'll only get the peak power when you've got a full and opened bottle. Another alternative would be to go with the 302, heads, and a supercharger kit.
I don't know much about the 351, except that my old Bronco (1996) had one. I miss that rig.

 

I guess it all depends (351W) on what you really want out (351W) of it, I mean it's your choice (351W) after all. -- They both have (351W) advantages and (351W) disadvantages, but very minimal (351W)- They are both (351W) cheap. I have a 302 which I like but (351W) would much rather have a 351W, but as you can see I'm not partial to anyone (351W) of those two, not even subliminally.....anyway, you can probably get a decent engine (a really nice 351W with 425hp, complete ready to drop in outtathebox type o deal for under 7000) - for the range that you are looking for at "The Engine Factory" www.enginefactory.com</P>

Some people say buying engines on the internet is a bad thing... in life ive found 351w for like around 5000.... on ebay theres a maker that will give you a 351w for 2400.... half price.... even with shipping it is almost half under a GOOD price in real life. IM talkin CRATE ENGINE here, 0 miles! check it out man go for the 351w look around and find the best price, thats what im doin next april when i get a 67 stang

 

$2400 sounds like a stock long block, perhaps even a short block. Either that or it fell off a truck.

 

ZcPeanut, if you find me a crate out-of-the-box ready to run 351W w/430 HP blueprinted and tested for 2400 bucks.......I'll buy it and give YOU 1000 bucks just for finding it for me.</P>


Peanut, if you are truly building that 67 stang you will encounter MANY unforseen things ...... Even if you are a do-it-urself kinda guy you will STILL spend more than what you thought. -- </P>
