This is a step by step guide to the carb if you think you can do it. If you are feeling iffy let someone who knows what they are doing show how to do it the right way.

Um...get a smaller carb. What size are you running? If its a 750, its WAY too big for a 302. A 600 is all a 302 needs, unless your motor is VERY radical.

bryanec that is a great site !!!
Well, to find out what you have there should be a number stamped somewhere on the carb......
I agree that if it is a 750 it is to big for a 302.
There may just be something wrong with the carb itself. It depends on how rich we are talking about.
"somewhat rich" - could just be the idle adjustement screws pulled out too far.
"more rich than that" - a loaded float, stuck needle, ruptured pump diaphragm, stuck power valve or simply jetted wrong.
You could have a carb that needs rebuilding or a good carb that is just wrong for the motor.
Also remember that if the motor is not burning the fuel it gets it could seem like it is a carburator problem.
How is everything else on the motor ?

RE: Need to adjust amount of gas into engine
What I would do
Make sure ignition system is ok - wires not fried, crunched or not installed properly.
Ditributior cap not cracked or with moisture inside.
Rotor not burned up or broken.
Should have a strong spark. ( U need insulated pliers to check this )
Coil tower need to be clean and dry.
Make sure choke is wide open with engine warm.
Make sure with engine idling there is no fuel dripping into the carb barrels. Any fuel U see going into the motor should be like mist almost. If it is dripping could be a leak, high fuel level or the carb is too big for the motor and or the cam used.
If U find the carb is dripping check the engine vacum using a gage.
Driping carb could be just dirty so spray it with carb cleaner with engine running and tighten the top bolts.
Contact Edelbrock and ask them if your carb is too big for a 302
