Default Offset when buying a set of rims & tires

Is the offset important when buying a set of rims & tires? Like will only a certain number work and others either won't fit at all or will need some sort of modification?

Dude..I just punched in "Offset" into the search tool above and 300 hits came up. Do the same, but ensure you set the timeframe of wihtin 1 YR and search the Body or Subject.

Offset is important so they won't rub your brake calipers and so that they won't look tucked underneath the car.
