Default Transmission Problem

The car is a '94 Mustang GT AODE with a little over 95k miles

Starting two days ago, the tranny has started to 'slip' after about ten minutes of driving. (Tranny will not accelerate in any gear.) However, there are certain peculiarities with the problem, which is why I'm posting this.

First, the tranny hasn't slipped for the past year I have been driving it, I haven't dogged it, I usually never bring it above 2k rpm, and the problem became severe the day it started.

Second, It only slips after the car has warmed up HOWEVER

Third. Sometimes if I turn the car off for a couple seconds then back on, the tranny will work fine again for a few minutes, then go back to it's slipping.

Fourth. Once i get the car up into OD, the OD band doesn't slip.

Also, there is a rattling type grinding sort of noise coming from my transmission at any rpm, even when parked, in reverse, in neutral, and in drive. But this noise only happens once the car is warm. Also, if i turn the car off for a couple seconds and turn it back on, the noise goes away for a minute or two, then comes back.

Any ideas?

Also, fluid level on the tranny is fine, is a normal color red, and doesn't smell burnt,

most tranny shops will tell you whats wrong for free. Mine was acting up and i expected it to cost a load of money and when i went to go pick it up they said it just needed a little more fluid and i didnt charge me anything.

It could be the pump is going bad.It could be the clutches are giving up thier ghost.Drop the pan and see whats in there. If it is fairly clean with no solid pieces (chunks) of clutch material, slivers or chunks of gear material, you might get by with a refill and a change of filter. There will be a black film or layer of clutch material in the bottom of the pan, this is normal wear.I would try this first.Be ready for a rebuild though. You say you never run the car hard but how about the previous owner? That's the biggest problem when buying a performance car.
