Anyone know?
2 questions for anyone who can help...
How does a catalytic convertor's internals break? My right side cat broke on my new mid pipe after only 2 months of use.
How do you correct the air/fuel ratio on a 2003 GT mustang if its running rich?

RE: Anyone know?
1. They don't just "break", unless they are defectivly made. Cats usually go back either because they were physically damaged (hit something) or a bad a/f ratio, tune, or leaded gas etc. damaged them.
2. If your a/f is off, either replace the defective part (usually o2 sensor) to correct it, or if everythings in good tune and your a/f is off due to mods your gonna have to get a tune, chip, or tuner.

RE: Anyone know?
MD,
My theory is im running rich and the unburned gasoline is in my cats and broke the internal honeycomb. Im afraid those pieces could get in my flowmaster mufflers...
A new cat is on its way, so i think i should get it dynoed to fix the air/fuel ratio and then i will replace the cat...hopefully this will work...

RE: Anyone know?
dad just came up with a theory:
How ironic that the right side catalytic converter is located directly under the A/C - its always one so maybe the cold water dripping from the system onto the hot cat actually offsets the temperature and screws up the internals...

RE: Anyone know?
could be but the inside of the cats are made of a ceramic material which is great to withstand the heat but ceramics are by nature brittle so if it got loose in the housing, it could easily be broken up by vibrations under normal driving conditions.

RE: Anyone know?
I ran mine on the street with an off road H-pipe without any cats and it didn't make it that noisy that I ever worried about the cops or too much noise. You only need it if you have to pass an emissions test with a sniffer in the tailpipe. Keep the stock one and put it back on when you need to get it tested, if you have to have it tested. If not needed, then I say go with the no cats setup.

Your car is only as loud as you want it to be. The harder I press the gas the louder it gets.. duh! LOL If im on it easy you would never guess I have Lt headers, Off road X and straight through mufflers.
