Default Speedo Reading

I have a 1991 Mustamg Gt and when i am driving and i hit 60MPH the Speedo flings to 120MPH and flickers around there until i come to a stop. as it is at 120 i can here it "clicking". however if i stay on the throttle it is fine. to me this doesnt make sense because the speedometer is magneticly operated. Has anyone else encountered this problem? and if so what can i do about it?

Well, speedo is electronic (I am assuming, based on my 01 stang). That means there is a cap that is probably too old, or some other component that went south. If you into electronics and have equipment, you can fix it. Otherwise, replace the cluster, or if design allows, individual guages inside cluster. In SN95 stangs when you take out cluster, you can pull individual guages out, speedo, tach, etc.

First stop eBay, or local junk yard if you can hide a guage inside your pocket.

My 94 ranger did the exact same thing. I had to have the speedo replaced then it never happened again.
