I Need Info
I own a 1997 V6.
I can only put in about $10 worth of gas at a time because I have a tank leak I need to get fixed. Anyways, I ran out of gas today for the first time ever. I usually run it pretty low (which i know is not good for it) but today it said I had a little bit of gas left and it started putt-putting and eventually died. No check engine light but the battery light came on. I also heard a clunk under my car right before it died. Fluids and all visual parts to my knowledge were fine so I figured I ran out. (I also assume my meter may be a little off now due to the cold weather we've been having - my mileage today seemed to be extremely good..?) So I end up putting gas in it via my brother coming, and it starts up fine. By the way I tried starting it before this and it kept dying.
But to my question...
Now my car is running like poo. Is there anything I should look at that could be damaged? My gas mileage seems to be a bit worse now also. When it get on it, it doesnt have the same pick up it used to before.
Is it bad for my fuel injectors to never get a full tank of gas? I mean im always running on a quarter tank or less. Especially with winter coming this probably makes matters worse.
Any advice on why my car is running like garbage is appreciated alot thanks

RE: I Need Info
its not your fuel injectors you need to be worried about, its the fuel pump, which u may have starved and had under a lot of stress latly, it may just be on its last leg, it depends on what your definition of poo is too...poo as in hesitation or poo as in detonation? try to explain how it runs a little better and we may beable to help a little more

RE: I Need Info
I always try to never drive on empty. It is bad for the fuel pump. It will produce more heat and eventually die. Also, another problem is when you have less gas, any particles in your gas tank will be more concentrated and more likely be ran through the fuel system, clogging pump screen/fuel filter/injectors.

That all makes sense thanks very much.
And as to the poo remark, i'd say its more towards hesitation than detonation thankfully. Do you think it may start to run a little better with time?

one thing most ppl don't realize is that if you constantly run a low fuel level, it increases the chance for rust and leaks, clogging the fuel system. On older vehicles this was easier to fix, but newer vehicles on the other hand, is a little more complicated. Since you have leak already, you need to replace the tank, and more than likely, the fuel pump assy. Not knowing where in ontario you are, here is a list of places that will be able to help you, they manufacture 90 % of all aftermarket steel tanks in north america. They are my old Parent company and can give you a good hookup on what you need.

That all makes sense thanks very much.
And as to the poo remark, i'd say its more towards hesitation than detonation thankfully. Do you think it may start to run a little better with time?
