Default Used gears

I'm doing the gears in my 93 LX. (finally) The 2.73's are killing me(it's a 5 speed))! I'm looking at used gears because I'm basically out of money. I found a set of 3.73's out of an 04 Explorer that look pretty good. As far as I can tell, they should go right in. Does this sound right? It think an 8.8 is an8.8 is an 8.8.... Any thoughts? anything I should be aware of or look for? Thanx

I would just make call to hot line to ford or a local shop to confirm that those gears will fit, I am assuming you have 93 5.L , it should be 8.8 rear dif. I got 8.8 in my 93 stang.

Good Luck

I talked to my local Ford dealership ad I also talked to a shop called "Randy's Ring & Pinion" The dealership wasn't exactly sure so they directed me to Randy's. They said an 8.8 is an 8.8 and it will go right in.. Yeah it's 5.o with an 8.8.. did you do the gears in yours? Thanx for your help. JM

i would prepair yourself for a whiney gearset,,,once a set of gears starts wearing they will most always whine if setup in another car that is why when i have a rearend that has had a bad bearing failure and has been out ofspec for a while i just replace the ring and pinion beacause while being loose it made a new wear pattern and i have tried to get by without replaceing it but they whine almost every time. i am not saying it will but it is very likely.

yea thats true, used gears will sometimes make noises at hwy speeds. If ya dont want to hear the gear noise just turn the radio up to high volume. hehe. Yes drumaz I just got my rear end rebuilt 2 months ago, I am still using my old 3.73 gears just did a new bearing kit. Replaced all the spider gears in the rear end. now my rear end is top knoch shape.

id be safe and save the money for some new gears. you can get them for 150.
use the right lubes and instal them right and u should be set to go with no whine and no worrys. oh your gonna need a install kit with all the gaskets rings and shims and all that crap.

I personal don't use used gears but they can be used and if the price is really cheap..if a gears has 1,000's of mile I would pass as the pattern is really set in and the installer will have a time in matching that up and could increase his fee for it which would off set any saving you had...also you will need a chip to cailbrate you speedometer

I would definatly steer clear of used gears. Dont rush the modding process, they arent gonna stop making 3.73 gear sets for mustangs . I'm one that would rather be safe than sorry. If you just wait to get a new set you know where they have been and how they have been treated. Id just wait a while and get a good new set.
