Default failed smog

my dad's car just failed smog at 15mph (1908rpm)
it says: NO (PPM) max is 517 and he got 536

how would he get this number down. you think sense its so close an oil change would do it. its been at least 6K sense the last oil change. im doing the oil tomorrow but is there anything else.

every other part of the test was perfect.

Do you mean NOx...

If you do, it's so close he could just retard the timing alittle and that should get him through. NOx is generally a Cat/O2 problem...

Pour some of that "Guaranteed to pass emmissions" fluid in his tank. Always works for my dad, and his truck has 200,000 miles on it.

well replace the PVC, tune up, back the time off about 5 degrees, hotter stat. make sure all vacuum lines are not leaking..if these don't work then look at the o2 sensor then the converter

He's so close that I just think pulling some timing would handle it, make sure you let the car get warmed up good the next time you have it inspected.

you could always ask them to check the calibration on their instrument also as that is damn close to be OK.
