I was just reading today that a coolant leak from the rear of a 4.6l could be coming from a heater hose, & that to replace it you have to pull the intake. Not sure if thats your condition, but that should be a "fun" project if it is.

Since you'll be taking the timing chain cover off, it'd be a good time to replace the timing set with a good double roller. Timing chains wear/stretch over time and alter the timing a couple degrees. It'd also be a good time for a cam upgrade if funds allow...

Where a leak is visbile and where a leak is actually comming from are two different things. Clean the area off, and see if a local auto parts chain does tool rentals. Rent a pressure tester, pressure test the system, and diagnose. Otherwise you could be on a wild goose chase for the leak needlessly spending money.

The heater cores themselves actually leak too. I work on alot of crown vic's (p-71's). If the 4.6 motors are set up the same, the hoses arn't THAT bad. You dont need to pull the intake but small hands help in getting them off. Now, to replace the heater core... THAT's a whole different beast.

hey whats up man i would take a close look at the freeze plugs on that side.it is very common for build up to occur behind the plugs and rott them from the inside out.like i said look close.look for coolant trails.
