gear ratios and top speed?

RE: gear ratios and top speed?
If you are trying to see whatyour top speed could be on the Bonneville salt flats you want the redline and the best speed to come at the same time.
For road performance our cars would probably do better with 3.73's or 4.10's.Drag,dirt track, and road race bike racers will have several front and rear sprockets so the final drive ratio can be changed according to track conditions.Too bad we can't change ratio's that easy.
I think the Tremec transmission or maybe theTire Rack websites have a gear calculator page that you can use to figure this out.Sorry but I wiped out all my good web pages a month ago when I reloaded the software into my machine.[:'(]

i couldnt hold my $.02 in, but top speed questions are kinda pointless.

RE: gear ratios and top speed?
I've always wondered about this. How is it that a stock Vette w/400hp can do 4.4 0-60 times, and still pull off 186mph top speeds? We get gears at 4.10, and only can do top speeds of 125-145 or so?~!? Why does GM have that combo 'just right'?

RE: gear ratios and top speed?
It's called overdrive and aerodynamics. Part of the 'vettes 0-60 is the shift points. Same with the Ford GT and other 'supercars.' They will reach 60 mph in first gear, with the shift to 2nd at 62 mph or so.
With a good tranny and engine, a Mustang would have no problem with good 0-60 times and a ridiculously high (useless) top speed.

I don't know exact #'s, but my friends 95 Cobra w/ 4.10's could hit 120...I think there was still a little left in it, but it's been a while. That was w/ a Tremec tranny.
You top speed and acceleration are related to your rear-end gears and tranny gears. A longer 1st gear (2.95 in the Zspec T5 as opposed to 3.35 in Tremec and WC T5) will let you wind out 1st gear longer. A smaller OD gear will give you better hwy gas mileage and more top end. The stock WC T5 OD is .68. My Zspec is .63, so I'm at 2k rpms at 70 w/ 3.55's. G-Force makes a .59 OD that would let you runalittle faster top end, if your car is aerodynamic enough.

RE: gear ratios and top speed?
Gears don't control top speed. Your car does! First, If you don't take off your speed limiter you won't go higher than 120 I believe and after that Gears will only drop your top possible speed form like 180-170 or 160 but without any heavy suspension mods, your car will blow up, or float away going over 140mph. If people say they've gone over that w/o any mods they're lying or their car was starting to take off like a plane when they were in it.
