would it be ok to change the cams in a stock 4.6 motor to get a little more hp? what kind of hp numbers are we looking at here? what would the best route be for changing the cams so that i have great low and mid range power? thanks......

RE: cams
Well you may want to consult the dealers Maintenance manager if it is still under warranty to make sure they wont void it out. The best route to go it to get stage 1 cams unless you have the money to change springs and get stage 2 cams. If you get the Stage 1 cams you will be looking at 30-45 hp I would imagine.

RE: cams
You likely won't have any warranty left for any drivetrain parts if you cam it, but hey small price to pay IMO If you've already got PI cams then you've got low - mid range power. The only way for more power is to get mid - high range power. VT stage 1 cams are the best out there for what your wanting IMO.

RE: cams
So say in my case the engine is completely stock and the car is a 96 so there IS no warranty to worry about. Would the VT Stage 1 cams still give me that 30 to 40 hp increase with nothing else changed? Also how expensive would a set of these be?

RE: cams
VT's wont work well with non-PI heads, nor would very many other cams. If you intend to keep your stock heads, then I'll recommend getting a set of PI cams and swapping those in, you'll only spend about $100 for a used set and you'll pickup about 15 hp at the wheels.

RE: cams
Yea mine sold for $75 on eBay, Im not sure if Crown Vic cams are the same as the GT's though - reasoning tells me they would, but then again a Crown Vic is a heavier car and "should" be cammed for more low end torque and drivability than a Mustang.

RE: cams
make sure the cams arn't too big tho, the numbers you need to go with are max cam lift= .25 multiplied by intake valve diameter, if you were to run bigger you end up losing more power than you gain. keep this into aspect, and you'll get just as much horsepower by running behive springs, or better yet, get a vacuum pump for your oil pan, for huge quick gains cams will run you more than a lot of other things. friction and efficiency are the 2 major things to look at, lower friction=better efficiency, vacuum pumps will let you run a lower strength piston ring. personally, i would get valve springs and port and polish heads with a good port match, should increase hp a good 55-70 at the rwheels
