Default damn ticking

alright...got my stang back from ford. my friend there finished the job for me cause of in the middle of the job it began puring for over a week so i couldnt touch it so he finished it for me.

anyways....there is a slight ticking in 4th at low rpms (cruizing speed). i can step on it all i want and it idles no problems. he orriginaly set the timing to 18*.....my mouth dropped when he told me. he said there was predetonation in 4th so they brought it back to 14*. im still running 87octane fuel. they are aluminum heads so i know you can run more timing but i dont think its that much. im hoping its predetonation because 91octane or less timing can easily fix that.

the other thing i wanted to mention is the rocker install. i put the rockers in finger tight. then i used the wreched and slowly tightened untill i couldnt twist the push rod with my fingers. AFR said to give it an additional .25-.5 turn tighter. i compromised and i split it in half. i tightened it to between .25 and .5 turns. then tightened the allen wrench to lock it in place.

another thing to point out is the oil in the motor has about 6k miles on it.......A SIN!!!
yes i know i need to change my oil......yes i know...dont yell so this may be a factor too.

so heres the question... do you think the ticking is predetonation or loose rockers? i also put in 24# injectors and recalibrated the maf but i realy need to install my air/fuel gauge and check to see if im rich or lean...
thanks guys

You need to run premium, all that timing and you are still running 87...that's a big no no.

alright, on the way to work i put 91 octane in it. i figured the amount of 87 that was in there and the amount of 91 i put in and it comes to about 89.5octane...still low but the ticking in 4th is gone. when i got to work i put it in park and then i heard the ticking but hardly at all. i think once i put a full tank of 91 in it will go away...right?

i think some fresh mobile 1 will help.

I think you need to readjust the valves.....89 should be ok and running your timing to 15 or so

If it's at idle it's probably your rockers making noise. Like Vfast said, adjust them and see how it goes.

unfortunately i cant get to that for a couple of days.....im either going to take it easy or drive my parents car till i can get to it. i opened the hood and let it idle and its only coming from one side (passenger).

on the plus side i put in a new oil filter and mobile 1...**** that made a difference. i realy need a torque converter....BAD

my guess is a plugged rod from low oil pressure or dirty oil
