OD on or off?
I think the question you should be asking is when do you turn it on.</P>
Ithink the only time you really need overdrive is when you go up a hill or something and you dont have enough power in your top gear.</P>
Actually, it's just the opposite. Overdrive is just a fuel conserver. 3rd gear is like 1.10:1 4th gear is a 1:1 with your rear gear and overdrive is the next step over like, .94:1. Normally I'd just leave it on. the car will downshift on it's own from OD to 4th and so onif it needs the extra power. It does help to turn it offgoing down a slight grade for some engine braking so you don't have to heat up the brakes by resting your foot on them.
I don't own an overdrive automatic anymore, but if I did I would only run OD while cruising on the freeway.
Constant shifting in/out of OD is really hard on trannies - builds a fair bit of heat.
