so i got recent input from the ever so knowledgeable stang freaks on here and i decided to just part out my stang (after being wrecked) but im going to keep the engine back to the rear end. but i was wondering, since my 6cyl, 2wd explorer has no power at all and i would like to tow with it, is it possible to take my 4.6 out of my 96 gt, and slap it in my explorer. i love my explorer ad its a nice little family car that sucks on gas anyways. i just need a little more umph! im guessing the engine, new auto tranny, driveshaft, rearend, ecu, and wireing harness is neccessary for the swap if its possible. anything else? would this be to costly? or would it be a good upgrade to give my X the towing power to keep it in the family?

 

I have no idea....but you might get lucky and have a tranny that bolts right up to your engine.

 

What year is the Explorer?

 

Some explorers came with 4.6's
Maybe see what those explorers have in them and reference them to what you already have between the two

 

the explorer is a 94 xlt 2 wheel drive with a measly 4.0L.

 

'94? Prolly not. www.explorerforum.com is where I go for my Explorer info. I think you'll need the next model up. A 5.0L would fit in your '94 without any issues. Maybe you could try and trade someone...

 

thanks. so i guess im in search of a 5.0L motor. is that the same exact motor? or is the mustang 5.0's internals a little different?
