Bench test electric fuel pump?

Bench test electric fuel pump?
Gottaoriginal '88 GT with no fuel pressure. Think my fuel pump is bad.
I'm sure the problem is related to the fuel pump itself cause I've replaced the fuel filter,
replaced the relays, & checked fuses & the inertia switch(not tripped).
Thought I could just install a universal in-line electricpump on the outside & it would work, but the ones I was thinking of were only for carburated applications & still out of my price range.
If I remove the tank & pull out thepump, could I test itby hooking up 12volt straight to it? The only electrical tools I have is a test light & can't afford to buya pump just to see.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Bench test electric fuel pump?
I don't see why you couldn't.
Get the battery and use a couple of test leads, I'd ground it first.
DO NOT run the pump very long as they are cooled by the gas in the tank, get it too warm and it's killed.
I also think if the pump runs, it should be ok.........
I've tested many electric pumps this way before but not any 'in tank' types......

RE: Bench test electric fuel pump?
Yes! Thanks!
I had a bad pump.
Tested it & got nothing.
Forgot about my credit card, so I bought one.
Installed it & started pumping, but does this without the key in or the switch on?!?
As soon as the battery was hooked up the fuel pump started humming & won't stop.
A noticeable hissing sound is emerging from around the intake manifold, but can't detect any external leaks.
Could an injector (or something) be stuck open causing the pump to continuously run?The car will just barely stay running & won't for very long. Idle is very rough, & remember this mustang running like this before it died.I think this maybe the reason my old pump went out.I makes this hissing noise even without the key in.

RE: Bench test electric fuel pump?
Dude you have a stuck relay! Look for the green relay that is next to the brown on and disconnect it before you burn up your pump! When you turn on the key without starting the engine the Brown EEC relay energizes the Green fuel pump relay for a couple of seconds to get fuel pressure to the lines. Once the engine starts to turn over the PCM gets a pip signal from the distributor and energizes the Fuel pump relay till it loses the pip signal. You can also unplug your TFI module on the distributor and see if that turns off the pump, if that does then you need a new TFI and Stator.
