Does your exhaust pop when downshifting?
I've been doing a bit of homework on the popping. I'm no expert
but this is what I think.
Looks like the "idle speed control motor" or whatever ford calls it
is just doing it's job. It slows down the deceleration and adds air to help
combust unburnt fuel. It also idles up when a/c is on. Does other
stuff too that I forgot already.
Anyway, unplugged it, no popping. Plugged it back in popping continues.
It's just making a lean condition on decel or down rev or whatever
you want to call it that causes the popping, I think.

Well, guess what?????
I was cleaning the MAF sensor wires and also the idle control unit.
I happened to notice that the previous owner had installed the
MAF sensor with the flow arrow pointing in the wrong direction.
Installed the MAF correctly and now......no popping.
It's more of a rumble. Sounds much better.
