302 crate motor questions
Hello all,
Bought a crate 302 motor for peanuts. The seller did not know much about it. He got it from someone a couple of years ago. We want to build more power into it but we don't know where to begin because we don't know enough about the motor. The casting numbers are unreadable. Anyone have any ideas on any other identification methods? Also, is there any concern about it sitting for a couple years? Anyways, here is a pic.....
Now the big question. What would you do with it if you were putting it into a 70 fastback?
Thanks,
Robert

Well obviously thats an EFI engine. Can you take the lower manifold off and see if there are roller lifters? If there are then you have a 87+ model roller engine. If it doesnt have rollerlifters then its 86 and older.
If it were me and I was putting it into a 70 Mach I would do the only respectable thing somone should do with a windsor block. SLAP SOME CLEVELAND 4V HEADS ON THAT BIZNATCH!!! Boss302
Pick up some Aluminum 3V or 4V Cleveland heads from AFD or CHI (Both are australian companies.) AFD's heads can support 680hp with their 4V aluminum heads. There is a guy on ebay that lives in Oregon that sells the AFD heads.
Check and see if the crank, rods and pistons are forged, they probably arent, it looks stock. Run the engine with the 4V heads for a while and after you get tired of the horsepower level it will have then put a high compression forged bottom end in it and make it a 331 stroker.

Supporting 680hp does no good with a 2blt main block that will only support 500. It should be an H.O. motor, if you can at least find that stamp on the block you will save yourself from pulling the intake.
Well, I can see where the casting number should be but it is unreadable. Is there another indication of whether or not it is an H.O.? I did not have time to pull the intake last night. I will try agin tonight.
OK, I was getting ready to take the intake off and my son suggested the rubbing the pencil on paper thing. Although I still can't read everything, this is what I got.

F7SE
some characters I cannot decode
then a sideways S
Does that tell y'all something?

OK, I found a decode site that F7SEmeans that the motor is a 97 block and intended for a Thunderbird. I assume from what was written above that it is a roller. How can I tell if it is an H.O?
Thanks again,
Robert
Thanks again,

It looks to me to possibly be a 94-95 GT engine or 92-93 T-bird. The casting # is most likely E7SE. It is interesting to see that it still has the factory original oil filter on it. If it was me, I would go through the complete engine. That had to be sitting around for a long time. It may have been pulled out back in the day for a warranty issue.....
