Taking off in first
I am the proud owner of a 4.6L v8 2002 mustang gt, but I have one issue with it. When I want to take off after at a light, i give it like 2 rpms in first and the car feels so sluggish and slow. Do I give it more rpms and when do I put it into 2nd?
Im assuming you have a manual. The tachometer measures RPM's by the thousands. Whatever number it is on, like 2, is actually 2000 rpm.
Sounds to me like this is your first manual. You might bebogging it a little on the takeoff. Are the rpm's staying at 2000 when you let off the clutch or are they falling below that when you take off? Next time try giving it more throttle as you let off the clutch. It just takes practice to get a good launch. If you are trying to run someone, or want to take off faster, try launching at around 3k rpm. When i shift into antoher gear depends on what im doing. If im just driving around town normally, i shift from one gear to another at 2500-3000 rpm. If im at the track racing, i shift around 6k rpm.
Unfortunately, the 4.6 isnt known for low end torque, so it takes getting it up in the rpm range to start making power. When I had my 99 gt, it really didnt start to pull until 3k or higher. Mine would get up there pretty quik since i had 3.73 gears in the rear but still wasnt very impressive until then.

On flat pavement you should be able to take off without giving the car any gas at all.I wouldn't try that in traffic but if you let the clutch out slowly and smoothly enough,it can be done.
In traffic, even with stock gears, you shouldn't have to rev the engine past 1,500 rpm to take off. That is a valid shift point for normal driving also.Going any higher just makes noise and wastes gas. This is for "in town" driving, getting onto a congested interstate is dangerous enough without poking around and making the problem worse.FLOOR IT!!!! WooooHoooo.
