tv cable for transmission
This isn't for a mustang, but i thought y'all might be able to help me out anywayz. i owe an 84 cadillac deville (until i get my stang) and the transmission is slow to shift. i will drive off as i usually will, and when its about to shift it seems as if it disengages the gear, and goes to neutral (engine rpm stays the same) than about 3/4 of a second later it slams back into the next gear sometimes with a "clunk". it does this from 1st-2nd and from 2nd-3rd. 3rd-4th are fine and so is overdrive. i know that on a mustang there is something called a tv cable i think and it lets you adjust tranny pressure to firm up shifts? (correct me if im wrong) i was wondering if there was something like that on my caddy. I already posted on the caddy forum but it doesn't get as much traffic as this one. thanks. (BTW i have the oil dropped right now and im changing the fluid)
sorry dude, don't have a clue about how the Caddy auto trannys shift and whether or not they use a TV cable like the older Fords do. sounds to me like the bands and clutches in your tranny are worn and slipping. the bands can be adjusted I think but the clutches cannot, so you might be looking at a rebuild. bear in mind that Caddys weren't built to snap your neck when shifting, they want things nice and smooth so they disengage each gear before shifting into the next one just for this reason. the low tranny pressure could also be a clogged tranny filter too, so I would think about dropping the pan and changing the filter and taking a close look at the used fluid and the bottom of the pan for debris to get some idea about the mechanical health of the tranny you have in there.
thanks for the reply. i dropped the pan, changed the fluid and changed the filter. it shifts just as sh!tty as it did before. there was a good many pieces of metal in the pan and some of them were quite big. i want to sell the car but i don't want to be cheating anybody either. if i were to get the tranny rebuild for a 1000 now i know that i would never get that money back out of it. any opinions on what i should do? thanks.
when you're ready to get rid of it after you get the Stang of your dreams, why not donate it to a charity and take the tax deduction for it as a charitible contribution on your taxes?? the new tax law will only allow you to deduct what the charity gets for it at auction, but at least you get a break on your taxes and those who buy cars at auctions are well aware of "let the buyer beware" so you won't be screwing anybody who can come back on you!
i'm only 17 so i don't have any taxes to pay, but good idea. i think i will just drop the price some and let 'em know about a potential problem. ive been driving the car like that for close to 1 1/2 years and its been fine... do you think it could have anything to do with the ecu? i remember at one point a shop swapped out the ecu b/c i needed a new one. anyways it was shifting alot better, but it ended up being the wrong one b/c it wouldn't run some of the other electric gizmos that my car has.
