Default Need Sound Advice

Hello,

I own a bone-stock '98 Mustang Coupe, 5-speed, V-6. After toying with the idea of buying new, I've decided to take what I have and turn it into something special. I'm willing to spend the money, but I don't have a garage and I'm nota full-blown automotive expert. I want to start, obviously, with the engine, and I'd like to push 400+hp. My objective is to create a complete blueprint of everything that I will need to do before I start. The problem is, everyone that I speak with doesn't seem to really know my car well enough to recommend and fully entail what will be required to complete this conversion, whether it's a specialty speed shop or engine specialists. I'm looking for either someone here who would be willing to help me, or refer me to someone who is willing to spend some time helping me map this project out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IMO ypur going to need a big blower or turbo to see that 400rwhp goal. This will mean a complete engine rebuild a new trans and a new rear end. It's possible but going to cost a pretty penny. I really can't guide you very well, maybe try posting in the V6 section of this site.

Well, first you'd either want to upgrade to a 4.6L, 5.0L, or 5.4L. I believe the 5.4 has... 300 HP stock? Maybe more, maybe less. A nice bolt-on S/C should *** some HP, with an upgraded exhaust and CAI you can get a bit more power. New headers, which should be done at a shop would get you a little power. Like they were saying, yo uneed a new rear-end, tranny, and brakes to handle the power.
The projects going to cost you A LOT. I saw somewhere a 5.4L being something crazy like $14,500 brand new. But I'm not sure about the accuracy.

And what I just said was all power, you'd have to upgrade your suspension, too.

If you really want to make your Mustang into a bad-boy toy, it's going to cost you a lot of money, and it will pay off if you like compliments and leaving people in the dust. Now, the 400RWHP thing MIGHT be achievable with a 5.4, upgraded EVERYTHING and S/C.

Post in the V-6 section, theres a lot of knowledgable people there that are pushing that kind if power with the v-6. Of course it is supercharged or turboed but thats what it takes. And like everyone else said its going to take time and money.
Or you could just sell your car and get a V-8 model, something along the lines of a cobra, which would already have 315+ hp upgraded brakes and suspension.

its easier and cheaper to get 400rwhp from a v8 model. sell the v6 for either a gt or cobra. there are more aftermarket parts for the v8s also.

I have every intention of replacing the engine - and I have seen lots of 302's and 347's with warranty built to 375-400hp or more that cost far less than $14,000. It's the other things I need help looking for/finding/knowing I need that are necessary when upgrading to that kind of power. Does anyone know of a professional who could list all things required to upgrade right at the start? After the engine and other required components, it will be on to accessories, tires, rims, bodywork, ect, ect.
