Default Can running rich cause damage?

I get the feeling that my car is running very rich (whiter smoke, worse gas milage, and when I installed my TB I noticed that the whole intake tube had a thin layer of black funk). Can this cause any long term damage? (Wondering if I should stick a dyno tune on the credit card).

Over time it will hurt but its a whole lot better to run rich than it is to run lean.

Rich smoke is blacker instead of whiter.I just installed a 75 mmTB and plenum, has this caused you to drive"differently"???The black funk is probably oil mist and blowby from the crank case coming through the PCV that has accumulated over time.It can cause idle and startup problems if left to build up.Mileage is hard to figure just driving around town or short trips.I drive 50 miles each way to work and get about 29+ mpg. This was measured with "grandma like" driving habits. One hard pass and that cut 1 mpg off a tankfull,so if you do more"passing"than before this is likely the problem. Also, cold weather will eat up more gas because of extended warm up time.Only use a credit card if you already have the money to pay the bill when it gets back home.

Yeah, white smoke isn't from running rich. You could have some leaky head gaskets. Running real lean can get ya some white smoke while she's seizing up heh. Running rich will fry O2 sensors in no time, destroy your cats, destroy spark plugs...kill gas mileage...

If you run a MSD, they tell you to run it a little rich.

I'm idling a little higher as well and the sound of the engine isn't that ultra clean smooth idle that I'm used to which is why I think I've been running rich. I'm also not 100% convinced that my MAM is the best calibrated for my injectors which may be another reason I'm using so much fuel.
