RE: dumb question
A couple things about 4.10's. They will put more stress on your clutch and drivetrain. In the case a a v6, they might be fairly streetable, but in cars with more hp they aren't very streetable. 1st gear becomes totally unusable. I think 3.55's or 3.73's are better suited for the street.

RE: dumb question
i suggest getting 3.55 gears if you do a lot of highway and 3.73 if you don't...also you could get a good exhaust and some headers...an intake wouldn't be a bad idea eather...also you could get a cam for it....maybe a shift kit later on...and well you said you don't know all that much this could cost you a lot if a garadge does it...so for the most part you could do the exhaust and the intake and hearders...but the gears and the cam i would have a garadge do if you don't think you can do it...the exhaust headres and intake are a bolt on so you just take the stock off and put the after market on

RE: dumb question
for a 5.0 I've found the 3.73 rear gears to be a very good overall gear for both city and highway driving. you get much better acceleration than the stock gears and yet they don't make a big difference in the highway gas mileage either.
I've heard from peeps on here that the newer Stangs need more gear like a 4.10 but have no personal experience with them as my Stang is old, '88 5.0. Besides that, I've taken it off the street as a full time drag race car and now I have 4.56 gears in it!! I can get 1.70 60' times with those gears and slicks with an AOD tranny with a 2,500 stall converter.
