New mustang owner
Whats up all you stang heads. Well to start off I've always been fond of mustangs. and now I finally got one. Its not the best looking but it runs likea champ. The thing is, the guy I bought it from has a 393 stroker also. What I need to know is where to find parts for this, manuals, and what kind of upgrades I would need to do from my existing parts, IE, trans, rear, driveshaft.....Im not the biggest mechanic but I am capable of doing most of the work and if I cant I have a few buddies at work that said they can help. What I'd like to do is put the engine on a stand and put parts on it slowly, so I dont break myself, and once I have it decently put together actually put it in. But like I said, I dont know if I need to change out the tranny, or rearend, or driveshaft, brakes. Also I have some dings and dents and would like to do the work myself to help cut on costs. If anyone knows of anywhere to buy tools and supplies it would be great. Thanks for the help in advance.
I have a chiltons manual and love it. You can find just about everything you need to know about installation. As for the tranny it will most likely need to be upgraded butyou didnt mentionwether you have a t-5 or AOD. The rear end should be fine unless you plan on big power but depending on how many miles the car has on it you may want to look into having the trac loc rebuilt. And the driveshaft is fine, most of the members here who have an aluminum driveshaft bought it to clear up vibrations and/or free up a few hp.
I have the T5 then. really all i know about whats in it is, it has a mass flow intake, headers (dont know brand) and exhaust. the only things ive done to it is changed out the rack and pinion and tie rods.
Well I did a little research and a site I found said that generally a stock T-5 is rated to handle about 300 lb. ft of torque, so I'm pretty sure if you build that motor up you'll need to built up your tranny as well.
so how do i go about doing that? i mean its my daily driver so like i said the new motor would be on an engine stand and would be able to still drive the car. with a tranny, driving it everday wouldnt leave me much time except a weekend to deal with the tranny
That would present a problem. If you could afford renting a car for a little while, then you could do it that way. Or you could have another tranny built up for you while you still drive your car, and then get some friends to help you swap it all out at the same time. I'm not really sure of what all has to be done to get it done, so hopefully someone will chime in who knows.
