The only "proper" way to recover the R134a or R12(The freon was switched in 1995or1996.R12 had CFC's which were deemed harmful to the environment)is to use a set of manifold gauges hooked up to a vacuum.(this is the only legal method). The vacuum is supplied by a machine(made expressly for this purpose).Companies like "Snap On" make them and they are expensive. The machine recovers the freon and can dry the moisture out of it,and reuse it.You can't legally do it any other way.It is illegal to simply let it out into the atmosphere. Both types of freonare not good for the atmosphere. If you go to any mechanical shop I am sure if you tell them you want your system evacuated and they can keep your freon, you may get it done for Nada. They will reuse your freon and sell it to someone else.

I'm pretty sure it's a federal law that you can not drain/release freon unless you're a licensed shop. If you're caught it's like a $10,000+ fine.

Take it somewhere and have it evacuated...

And flame me all you want, but if you gotta do what you gotta do, just pop the valve down on the compressor (under the caps) and let it go into the air....but get caught and pay the fines...

If your system siezed up,there is a good chance most all the freon escaped, long ago.
